Womens' Qualification, Round 1: Sunita Rao (USA) - Kathrin Woerle (GER) 3:6 7:5 6:3

My original onsite report from www.sports-india.com:

Sunitha started very badly comitting too many unforced errors which made her loose her first game, so that she early was one break behind in the match. On the other hand, German Woehrle had no problems to win the first three games of the first set. Fortunately, Sunita got back in the game in the fourth game and won her serve quite easily. There were slight chances for Sunita to break Kathrn in the seventh game, but after a 30-30 situation, the German finally made it and even had double break point against Sunitha's serve when she was returning for the set at 2-5. Again, there was a slight chance for Sunita to come back in the final game of the set, as she already lead 15-30 against Woerle's serve, but again, Sunita comitted too many unforced errors - this time, a backhand return shot was too long and made the German girl win this set.
It did not look well for our girl at all at the beginning of second set. Though Sunita saved her first service game in the second set, she got broken twice at 1-1 and 1-3. Woerle seemed to be on the sunny side of the day that time - but she did not manage to hold her serve afterwads. Sunita converted her second break point of the game and just trailed 2-4 and one break down. No problems for our girl afterwards, sending Woerle to the bench for court change by a clean sweep. Woerle was 40:0 in the lead at own serve and 4-3 lead, but she lost four points in a row giving Sunitha a break point. Sunitha even had Advantage for a second time, but Kathrin somehow manage to stand the pressure - and seemed to have prevented the turn of the match. Afterwards, Sunitha had slight trouble at own serve after a double fault and an easy smash error, but could keep up. Woerle now served for the match at a 5-4 score - but the points were 30-40. Break point for Sunitha, and she just took it! 5-5 now, the match was turned and Woerle looked quite impressed in the strong heat out there in Flushing Meadows. Sunitha did not even need the tie-breaker to win that set, as Woerle gave her a break point in the twelth game, which was converted.
Early in the third set, Sunitha kept the pressure up and broke the German again. She seemed to control the match now, but when she served at 4-2, she trailed 0:40 and Woerle converted the second break point. Nevertheless, no need to worry about that, as Sunitha just was the better player now. She took back what she was taken away before. Again, very impressingly, she had a single break point and converted it - what a great big point conversion. At 5-3 and own serve, it was just time to finish the German off.
